How to Keep Your Home Cool and Fresh in a Humid Climate

Air-conditioning isn’t the only way to stay comfortable in a hot, humid home. These practical steps keep rooms cooler and fresher — and cut your electricity bill at the same time.

1. Block the heat before it enters

Close curtains and blinds on sun-facing windows during the hottest hours. Even a simple light-coloured curtain reflects a surprising amount of heat.

2. Improve airflow across the room

Position two fans to create a cross-breeze — one pulling air in, one pushing it out. Moving air feels several degrees cooler than still air.

3. Control the humidity

High humidity makes heat feel worse. Dehumidifiers, moisture absorbers and proper ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens all help. Fix dripping taps and dry damp laundry outdoors where possible.

4. Cook and clean smart

Use the extractor hood, cook with lids on, and run the dishwasher or washing machine in the cooler evening hours to avoid adding heat and steam midday.

5. Let air circulate around everything

Keep furniture slightly away from walls and use breathable bedding and rugs. Good circulation prevents stuffy corners and damp spots.

6. Add a little greenery

Indoor plants improve air quality and add a fresh feel. Just don’t overwater — excess moisture works against you in an already humid climate.

Shop fans, storage and home essentials to keep your space cool, dry and comfortable all year round.
